Joseph Bailly and his family came into what is now known as Porter County back in 1822. He set up a fur trading post along the Little Calumet River. His store was popular for Indian trade. The town of Baillytown was platted in 1834, but Bailly died in 1835, and this was when the initial sale of Porter County land took place. In 1908, Porter was incorporated into a town. The first fire department for the area was also established the same year. By 1910, Porter’s population was slightly over 500 residents, but the town would grow with time. In 1912, a new building was leased for a town hall, and it was this same building where fire materials and equipment was stored. Electric lighting for the Porter school came about in 1919, and by 1920, the population had augmented to nearly 700. In 1922, the Dunes Highway (also known as U.S. 12) is built, leading from Gary, Indiana to Michigan City. Growth continued to take place throughout the 30’s and 40’s, but in 1948, a tornado tore through Porter, leaving people in disarray and the task of rebuilding. Porter would come back. A new grade school was built, and by 1960, the population of Porter was over 2,000. Fallout shelters were constructed throughout the town in the early 60’s as Cold War fears escalated into fears of a nuclear war with Russia. This “red tide” relating to the fear of communism and the Soviet Union did not end for the entire country until the 1980’s. Today, Porter is a growing town that still maintains a tranquil, relaxing atmosphere. Residents are very close with each other in this small town, and back in 2006 the 80th anniversary of the Indiana Dunes State Park was celebrated along with the 40 year anniversary of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Porter attracts a lot of visitors because of its unique history and historical homes that still stand today.
