Indiana, as we know it today, is vastly different in terms of state borders and land mass compared to many years ago. Furthermore, there was no GMC dealer in Indiana back in the 1700’s. The state became part of what is known as the Northwest Territory back in 1787. Ohio was apart of this territory and so was all of the landmass lying west of Pennsylvania and northwest of the famous Ohio River. The states of Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin were all included in the Northwest Territory, along with a small section of northeastern Minnesota. By 1800, Ohio left the territory as ordered by Congress, and the remainder of the land was called the Indiana Territory. Eventually Michigan left the territory, and Indiana shrunk in size to what we know it by today in terms of boundaries. The Indiana Territory lasted until 1816, and on December 11, 1816, Indiana officially became the 19th state admitted into the Union. After statehood, numerous immigrants came about in the 19th century. Many were Germans that settled into the region, though some Irish and English, and some East Coast Americans also came. Today, Indiana is a heavily populated state with thriving schools, businesses, and excellent opportunity, along with tons of recreation for the entire family.
